Moore Haven Elementary students participated in the contest by reading books from the Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) list.  SSYRA is a statewide program to motivate students in grades 3 through 8 to read, read, read.  It is sponsored by the Florida Dept. of Education and Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME).

MHES had 25 students participating in the program.  After reading each title and passing a quiz, the students were allowed to eat lunch in the Literacy Coach's, Kristi Hingson, office.  After 3 books students received a new book and they were eligible to vote on their favorite book from the list.  Eleven students qualified to vote for their favorite book.  Once students read 5 books, lunch was on Mrs. Hingson from a local business in town and 7 students enjoyed that incentive.  The biggest reward of all is yet to come.  Students reading 10 or more books are eligible to take a field trip to a Barnes & Noble book store.  The students will be transported on a "party bus limo" that day and have lunch out.  MHES had 4 students qualify for the trip that will take place in May.

So which book was the favorite at MHES?  This year the winner was White Fur Flying, by Patricia MacLachlan.  FAME will announce Florida’s favorite SSYRA at their conference this week.  The new 2016-17 award list will also be announced.

This contest and it's prizes were possible because of a literacy grant from The Glades Education Foundation. Thank you for supporting our students
